Marble Acid Etch Damage
A cleaning service worker used acidic cleaner on a newly installed marble floor. Marble is a calcium-based stone. Acidic substances, such as this improper cleaner, react chemically when they come in contact with calcium, creating acid etch damage on the surface of the stone. The North Shore homeowners were worried that some tiles or even the entire floor would have to be replaced. During our consultation, we explained that we deal with this sort of problem on a regular basis, and that our stone restoration services could completely restore the finish.
Our Marble Floor Restoration Process
First, we masked and protected all the surfaces surrounding our work area. Then, we used diamond abrasives to remove a very thin upper layer of marble, virtually erasing the damage. To restore the glossy, reflective finish, we used a marble polishing compound. Our final step was to apply a high quality impregnating sealer to inhibit staining.
We asked the homeowners to share our free, downloadable Stone and Tile Care Guide with their cleaning service to help prevent such damage from happening again in the future. This Care Guide specifies that marble and other natural stone floors should be cleaned with a stone-safe, pH-neutral cleaner.
